I only have a few items I wish to add to my wardrobe this fall, and my main mantra is "KISS", aka "keep it simple, stupid!". I've already mentioned a black leather tote, and next on my list is a long sweater with a side zip.
This one from Gap is technically a sweatshirt, which I can totally get behind, I am all about the comfy coziness of a sweatshirt. Kara, my six year old, is also all about the "comfy cozy" vibes, which is pretty adorable. She'll say "Mom, I just LOVE this sweater, it is so comfy cozy!" The apple didn't fall far from the tree with that one.
I also like this option from Jcrew, both the vintage ivory and heather grey are great options. Along with my "KISS" anthem, I'm sticking to a very neutral palette of mainly black, grey and white for any new purchases.
I think this style of sweater would work great with leggings, and I like the idea of layering it with perhaps a striped top underneath and unzipping the side for a little peek-a-boo action.
Free People also has a fun split side sweater called the "Docklands Pullover", made of dark grey french terry. This one is like the extreme version of the others, with the slit all the way up the side and no zipper. It's on a pretty good sale right now too.
Here's a few more options as well:
