I've had several inquiries on how to go about styling the 2013 color of the year, emerald. Questions that have come up are "How do I keep it from looking too harsh?", "Is it really that versatile?" and "How do I wear it from season to season?". Today I would like to delve into those answers, and show how you can incorporate the color into your everyday style.
First off, I think the key to keeping it from looking too harsh or overpowering is to always pair it with a neutral. Either black, white, gray or a camel brown all look fabulous when paired with emerald. Personally I would not mix it with another color (unless it be a small accessory), I think the intensity of the green needs to be tempered with something that is easier on the eyes. Patterns that look great with emerald are stripes and leopard.
My other tip is to limit the color to only one piece of your outfit. Either the top, the bottom, or an accessory in emerald is the perfect punctuation; anything else would be overboard.
Below I have compiled several looks as examples for you to use when considering how to incorporate emerald into your wardrobe.
An emerald accessory such as a great bag or shoe will carry you from season to season with ease. For winter months I love it paired with warm black or gray layers. For spring and summer, it looks perfect paired with white or camel.
One of my favorite ways to dip my toe into a color trend that I am not too sure of, is to incorporate it in a small way, with either jewelry or nail polish. You can pick up great jewelry on the cheap at Forever 21 or H&M, and drugstore beauty brands always have a rainbow of nail polish colors to choose from. If you find yourself really enjoying the color in this way, then it's safe to invest in a larger item as well!
I hope this gave you some great ideas on how to incorporate emerald into your everyday style. For more, please check out my previous posts on emerald:
