My husband and I are sneaking off this Friday to a one night stay at our favorite little ocean side town, Half Moon Bay. We are thrilled to be getting an overnighter without the kids-lets just say it is well overdue! Unfortunately, warm spring weather will not be upon us-the forecast is calling for clouds and even rain. But honestly I think the beach in the rain is even more romantic! Here are my ideas as to what to bring along, and how I would mix and match to get the most out packing light.
The trick when packing for a short weekend away-or any trip for that matter- is to make sure what you have all mixes and matches. Stick to basic tops in solid colors or versatile stripes. Pick one patterned scarf that has colors from your tops so you can wear it several days if you choose. Pack minimal jewelry- I like to bring basic studs that can be worn all weekend, and one statement necklace and ring to throw on when I want to dress up a bit. Try and bring only one pair of walking shoes (in this case the riding boots) and one pair of dressier shoes for evening activities. Being a shoe-lover this is hard, but they take up valuable space in your bag if you bring multiple pairs. You know I love my skinny jeans, and they are perfect to pack since you can pull boots over them, or pair them with your dressier shoes for evening. Wearing them from day to evening prevents you from having to bring an extra pair of pants for the same day-another bag space saving tip. Black skinnies are perfect because they transition well to evening time. Lastly, add a lightweight jacket to keep out the chill, a roomy tote with a cross-body strap for hands-free carrying, some red lipstick to easily amp up a look and you are good to go!

And here is how I would mix and match these items according to our itinerary:
Morning: Leave bright and early-grab a Starbucks for the 1.5 hour drive
Comfort is key in the car!
Afternoon: Lunch at a casual restaurant, wine tasting (you didn't think I would go on a trip without including that activity did you?!), strolling main street, hitting the beach
Evening: Nice dinner + drinks before turning in early to enjoy our oceanfront room (wink, wink)
Morning: lounge at hotel, breakfast in room, checkout, stroll beach
Afternoon: Hop in the car and hit up some antique shops on the way home.
This would be my outfit for the entire day since we will be heading home in the late afternoon.
I hope that inspired you on how to pack light and get the most out of what you bring on your next weekend getaway!
