California Love: Choose California Grown

Thank you to California Grown for encouraging me to connect with California growers and encouraging California consumers to "Choose California Grown" when they can.

Recently I was given the opportunity to enjoy some of my beautiful home state's bountiful harvests.  As you know, I love California, and blog about my adventures here so that I can convince all of you that you should live here too.  Not really, but  I do love sharing what our state has to offer with you all.  I think it is fun to get glimpses into how people are living across the country.  It's no secret that California has a booming agricultural business, and living in the Central Valley I am right in the heart of it: I'm surrounded by orchards and farms, and am so lucky to be able to shop local grown food year-round.  I have at least twenty small, family-owned farm stands within a ten mile radius.   I find it very important to support local California businesses, not just to help our local economy, but also because the food and/or flowers are much fresher that way.  Eating local is a big movement now you know, so get in on that! For my review, I chose to receive a bouquet of hand-cut flowers.

They arrived on the perfect day-I had just came down with a nasty virus (body-aches, chills, the whole bit) so these brightened my day when I really needed it.

In a box this nice, you know the flowers inside must be good!

Normally when I buy a grocery store floral mix, I split up the miscellaneous blooms into several smaller bouquets and add them to different rooms throughout the house.  These 15 rose stems were just too pretty to split up, so I put them in my favorite vase and placed them in the center of my kitchen table where I could enjoy them all day.

Several days later, after they begin to lose some petals, I like to take the stems that are still in good shape, cut them down and add them to a smaller vase, such as a mason jar.  I have found that this makes them last just a tiny bit longer.  I put them in my kitchen windowsill to cheer me up while I'm doing dishes.

I seriously wish you all could smell these photos, because the scent was unbelievable.  They had such a strong, beautiful scent that even through my stuffed up nose I could still smell them.  I couldn't taste my Thanksgiving dinner, but at least I could smell these roses!

This particular bouquet came from a grower in Salinas, California.  You can watch a great little video profiling the grower right here (if nothing more for the gorgeous floral shots!)

For my fellow Golden Staters, I thought I would include some of these facts from the California Grown website that I found interesting:

  • California is home to more than 250 flower farms.
  • California produces more than 75 percent of the cut flowers that are grown in the United States. (Seriously??!! Wow.)
  • California’s flower farms have a $10.3 billion economic impact in California and the United States. For every dollar a California farmer earns, 92 cents goes right back into the local economy.
  • California cut flowers meet the strictest growing standards in the world.
  • Nationwide, consumers purchase an estimated $17 billion of floral items annually.

So when considering California Grown products, don't forget the floral industry as well!  Products at your local supermarket should be labeled California Grown, but if you do not see the label, ask your grocer and they should be able to tell you which products are.  Let's all remember to support the state in which we live and love!

Sweet Picks: Winter Layering Essential: The Vest

A great way to add interest and extra warmth to your winter wardrobe is with a nice warm little vest.  There are so many different styles to choose from, there is bound to be one that fits your style!

The "Puffer":
These are great for more extreme temps, and have a definite sporty vibe.  My two favorite happen to be from Old Navy: love this olive green version and this gray tweed.

Faux Fur:

For the more daring fashionista, faux fur is a fun option. (Say that 5 times fast).  Some of the fur vests I see out there can be a bit...much.  These are a bit more my speed.  On the left we have a nice muted gray/brown toned fur with a sweet bow belt for some definition.  In the middle I like the almost striped effect on this black and white fur version.  And to the right we have boho-chic at it's finest with a mongolian(esque) fur vest.

Sweater Vests:

For a more classic look, a sweater vest is a great option.
Middle: Fairisle in rust

Mixed Bag:
A few more cute options.

Left: Sherpa lined moto vest I've had my eye on this one for awhile, and bought it over the weekend when it was on may-ja sale at Gap.  There is also a brown and khaki version.
Middle: Utilitarian style...still loving this look.
Right: You can't go wrong with leopard print micro-fleece!

And here are a few great ways you can style your vest this winter:

Holiday Gift Guide: Tween Sister

I feel like I'm maybe a tween trapped in a 30-year-old body, because these items are always the most fun for me to pick out.  Maybe it's because the tween/early teen years were always the most fun for me creating my wish lists.  You are no longer just blindly wanting whatever the latest Barbie is, but are really starting to develop your own sense of style.  I still remember a few of my favorite (at the time!) items I got from my wish list one year when I had just turned 14- a bottle of CK1 perfume/cologne (remember it was for both sexes?! Ha!!) and some shiny black athletic-type shoes-I can't remember what brand they were, but it was something "of the moment".  Ahh, memories.  Here are a few items that would make great gifts for the tween/teen girl in your life:

It's Holiday Gift Guide Week! Kicking Things Off With My Christmas Wish List!

Good Monday morning to you my friends!  I'm so excited today because the time has come to start rolling out those holiday gift guides! I really have so much fun putting these together for you guys, and I put a lot of time and effort into finding items that I think are perfect for gift giving.  Stay tuned as each day this week I will be posting a new gift guide that will hopefully cover everyone on your list.  To kick things off, I'm revealing the items that I am wishing for this Christmas...I have a feeling you may add a few of these things to your list too!

xmas wish list

1. Heart Me Sweater, JCrew.
This has unfortunately sold out after the Black Friday sales.  Luckily I already snatched one up for myself.  I hope they re-stock them for those who are still interested.

2.  Charlotte Ronson Masquerade Collection-Sephora
I love the color palettes of this collection. The eye shadows are the perfect neutrals and the lipsticks are so deep and dramatic-perfect for the holidays!  The super cute packaging and great zipper pouch they come in seal the deal.

3.  Laura Mercier nail polish
Does anyone know the scoop on LM polish? I found this gorgeous wine color online awhile back that is pictured above, but now all I can find is this purple color I linked to called Twilight.  Do they only come out in limited editions?  I'm bummed because I don't even know what the name of the color above was.

4. Plaited shopper, Zara
Mentioned my lust for this before, and still haven't lost that lovin feelin.

5.  Kindle Fire,  Amazon
Call me a cheapskate, but I just can't shell out the dough they want for an iPad.  This new Kindle Fire seems to be a great alternative at a much more reasonable price.
And if you get it for me Santa, I wouldn't mind this leopard case for it!

6.  Renegade Cluster necklace, Stella & Dot
I am head over heels in love with this necklace.  I think it would fast become the go-to piece in my jewelry collection.

xmas wishlist

7.  Toms Herringbone Classic Teal Pop
Need a new pair and these are sups cute. (Size 7.5)

8.  Laura Mercier Creme Brulee Duo
I can't even tell you how long I've wanted this darn set.  And with the return of cold weather comes the return of me liking to take long, hot soaks in the tub.  Let's do this!

9. Colorblock Stripe Tee, Jcrew
I gifted myself this little number too over the weekend.  The interesting color combo is what got me.

10. Round Conjure Rug, Anthropologie
In 2.5" size. I have been wanting this for my kitchen to go in front of my sink area.

11. Joules Ribble Wellies in "Saddle"
I saw these for the first time over on Adella Avenue, and haven't been able to stop thinking about them since.  The pink around the zipper back is such a great little detail.

12.  Black Urchin box, Furbish
Yes. Please.

And there you have it folks, what little ol' me is hoping for this Christmas.  I'd love to hear what is on your wishlist, so drop a few in the comments.  The more you put it out there in the universe, the more likely you are to receive, right?!?

Guest Post on GS Lillian: My Holiday Wish List

Stop on by the great blog GS Lillian today, where I am sharing a snippet of what is on my Christmas wish list this year!

Work It Wednesday: Polka Dot Jeans (Yes, you read that right!)

Okay, you may think I'm crazy, but I kinda love these polka dot jeans.  I don't know...am I crazy? You can tell me the truth, we're friends.  I don't think I would have noticed them if it weren't for the Swell catalog.  The models made them look super cute.  But of course, models have that way about them don't they? Always making shiz look cute.  Peep it:

Before I lose you, keep an open mind and check out my three ways of styling them. Then let me know what you think.

So what do you think? Would you wear them? Or save them for your twelve year old cousin?

Interior Infatuation: Hints of Red

I'm not normally a red person.  At least not anymore.  In our first home ten years ago, I painted our master bedroom a deep red color.  People thought I was crazy.  And after living in it for awhile, I thought I was too.  Lesson learned.  But I'm finding myself drawn to these little hints of red...perhaps it's the holiday season?

What do you think? Are you a red person?

Winter Accessory Must-Haves

The temps are cooling waaay down here, so it's time to start pulling out those must-have winter accessories: knit beanies, scarves and leather gloves!  My supply needs a definite updating, so I've compiled a few of my favorites in some yummy colors...
A must to keep our heads and ears warm.  And for me, to protect my ears from the wind-it gives me a mean earache!  I love the comfy, boho vibe of all these chunky knit versions.

Top, left to right: 1, 2, 3
Bottom: 1, 2, 3

This season I'm looking for a good infinity scarf, and a warm and cozy knit scarf.

Top: 1, 2, 3
Bottom: 1, 2, 3

There is no other way to go in my opinion.  Lined leather gloves are the ultimate in keeping your hands warm and toasty.
Top: 1, 2, 3
Bottom: 1, 2, 3

Numbers 1& 3 on top and 2 on bottom are cashmere-lined and are under $40 on sale!! An unbelievable deal!

California Dreaming: Jamestown & Sonora

Last Friday my husband and I were able to take a quick half-day trip up to two of our favorite local(ish) towns: Jamestown and Sonora, Ca.  They are about a 40 minute drive up in the hills from where we live, and they are just oozing with old-fashioned charm.  It makes for a perfect afternoon of strolling down the streets, antique shopping and eating at one of my favorite restaurants.  I took pictures on a trip from earlier in the summer which I forgot to share.  Our Friday trip reminded me to post these for you.

Here is a gorgeous building in Jamestown, which houses a great antique shop:

Any town with wine tasting is a town I approve of!

I just love quaint little old churches like this.

Did you know that John Wayne makes toilet paper? Yeah, me either. Weird.

I fell in love with this window display from a shop in Sonora called Backspace.  Turning vintage globes into a hanging mobile is so brilliant.

Old building love.

Can never pass up a bargain book cart!

Candy stick anyone?  In every flavor imaginable.

Dinner at one of my favorite restaurants: The Diamondback Grill.

Their roasted red pepper and mozzarella burger is to die. And make sure you upgrade to garlic fries!

Ambiance is key...love the old peeling walls and tin roof.  Also enjoy when you can see what is happening back in the kitchen.

We sat by the wall-o-wine.

In case you are wondering what that yellow thing behind me is...

...but a rubber chicken of course!

If you live in Northern California, visiting Jamestown and Sonora is a nice little escape into the country.
I always come back a bit more relaxed from a trip there.

Enter To Win a Free Year of Rachel Bilson Designed Shoes from ShoeMint!!

By now we all know I'm a long-time fan of Rachel Bilson's style. (See her all over my inspiration board from 2008!)   That's why I am so excited for the launch of her new collaboration with celebrity stylist Nicole Chavez and shoe giant Steve Madden: ShoeMint!  If you are a fan of Mary Cate & Ashley's Stylemint, or Kate Bosworth's Jewelmint, you are sure to be a fan of this.  Rachel has designed, along with the help of her collaborators, a collection of shoes (what else?) that will be offered at $79.99 a pair.  It follows the same premise as the previous mints, in that each month you can view and purchase selections picked just for you based on a style personality quiz.  There will be everything from flats, heels, ankle boots and more...yipeee!  Here are a few peeks at the shoes I have found around the interwebs.  It's all so very secretive you know...

Apparently these nude platform Mary Jane beauties will be one of the first pairs offered.  Love!

Holy maroon shoe lovin! (Or in Jill's words "cabernet")

And my fave-these leopard ankle booties.  Gah, Rachel Bilson is just so darn gorgeous! She kills me.  And I'm loving Hart of Dixie too, anyone else?  Such a fun, silly little show to watch every Monday.

So here is the cool part...head on over the the ShoeMint site, enter your email address to be entered into the giveaway for a free pair of shoes each month for a year!!!  It's that easy.  I am so crossing my fingers on this one!  You will also be able to view the site two days earlier before the Friday debut date.  If you are like me, then you get a kick out of that.  Also, for each friend you refer, you get a special discount on the shoes when the site launches.  It works like this:

Refer 2+ friends, get $25 off your first pair
Refer 10+ friends, get $40 off your first pair
Refer 40+ friends, pay only $1 for your first pair (for first 100 people who reach this goal)

Are you in, or are you in?? Then head on over to ShoeMint to sign up!

*I was not sponsored for this post-I'm just really that excited!
