Interior Infatuation: Gray Sofas

I've been whining and complaining about the poor state of our sofa for awhile now, and it's definitely come the time where we need to seriously start to look for a new one.  I was trying to hold out longer since we still have young kids and now a puppy, but it really can't hold up much longer.  You had a good run little sofa! 10 years to be exact.  I would say that is about the lifespan of a sofa for a family, right?!

After some consideration, we've come to the conclusion as to what we are looking for.  It needs to be a sectional, because the girls already fight over space on the sofa and neither one of them wants to sit in the "chair-and-a-half" for whatever reason (worst purchase ever-don't ever get one. Too small for two people, and apparently too big for one person because no one sits in it).  It needs to be relatively cheap-we're talking in the $1000 range, because we know this one will still be getting jacked up too (kiddos and puppy remember), preferably a removable slipcover, and of course comfy!  We haven't done a very exhaustive search yet, but this puppy from ikea seems to fill most of the requirements:

I just can't attest to how comfortable it is.  Any of you have experience with the Ektorp corner sofa?  Your input could potentially save me from the 2 hour drive I need to take to my nearest ikea just to sit on it.  I originally was thinking I wanted a white slip-covered sofa, but realistically I don't want to have to be washing the damn thing every weekend.  So this dark gray could definitely work.  I gathered up some inspirations on rooms with gray sofas because, well that's just what I do...

Pretty, right?  I think the gray can be both sophisticated and modern, masculine and feminine depending on how you style it.  I dig that.  So again, if you have had experience with the ikea sofa, I would super appreciate a comment on your thoughts.  And FYI, in dream world, my gray sofa would be this velvet beauty.

  1. ohhhhhh I love a grey sofa! There are some grey slipcovers for our IKEA KIVIK that I was eyeing, but I need wood floors before I pull the trigger on those. The grey with beige carpet would just be too blah for our room. We love our KIVIK sofa - very comfy and the white slipcovers have held up really well. I have washed them like three times I think and we've had them for almost a year now. I also bought extra covers in white because they were only like $30 each - but I haven't had to get them out yet. But at least I have them!

  4. I actually recently bought a gray Karlstad sofa from Ikea. The Ektorp was my second choice (I actually found that the ektorp was more comfortable but I loved the uber modern feel of the karlstad). I'm not going to lie, the quality level isn't the highest (I think the sofa frame is probably going to warp over time) but I'm overall happy with what I got for the price. Just as an FYI: the ektorp boxes were pretty huge compared to some of the other sofas, so you'll need a pretty big car to fit it.

  5. I love the gray as well! I have the white Ektorp couches throughout my house, but I do not have the sectional. They are really comfortable! For the price you can not beat it. That said; my sister has a beautiful gray faux suede sectional from West Elm. (Set 2A - http://www.westelm.com/products/walton-sectional-f467/?pkey=csectionals) A little out of your price range but may be worth a trip into the store too. :) I know there is a West Elm right next to the IKEA in Emeryville.
    Good luck! Fun!

  7. I have that EXACT sofa in that exact color! We bought ours off craigslist used then bought the cover brand new - got the whole thing for $600! Not bad.

I love this sofa. its super comfy and the gray is actually really pretty in real life - kinda textured and almost linen-y. We always get compliments on it!

  8. just as an alternative idea, check out Macy's Elliot Sectional Sofa - http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/elliot-sectional-sofa-collection?ID=522838&CategoryID=35419&LinkType=#fn=FURNITURE_TYPE%3DSectional%26sp%3D1%26spc%3D158%26ruleId%3D60%26slotId%3D23 - i just got one and while it is a little higher than what you are looking to spend, the fabric is super resistant (we have two 55 lb. dogs) to wear and tear. you also have the option of purchasing a seven-year plan that protects the cushions and provides free repair/cleaning/replacement. plus, it is HUGE - seriously huge. we had five adults on it the other night completely comfortably. the chaise is my go-to spot in the house now!

  9. Thank you so much for all your input ladies! Sounds like the ikea sofas are pretty good, so I'll have to peep them out. And Katie, thank you for the link to the Macy's sofa, I'll add it to the running!
