Interior Infatuation: Quirky, Comfy and Cool

Hello sweeties!  How was your weekend? Did you dress up and go out or take the kids trick-or-treating for Halloween?  We did the latter; all the kids in our family dressed up as the Wizard of Oz characters.  Natalie had the honor of being Dorothy and Kara was the Cowardly Lion.  It was too cute!

So I've been thinking a lot about that elusive "dream home" in the country of mine lately.  Scheming and dreaming on how to make it a reality.  And, of course, I'm already pre-decorating said dream home.  For now,I find myself drawn to a bit of traditional, mixed in with some casual chic, modern, and with a dash of the quirky and unexpected.  Here are a few examples of what I think captures this:

I love the look of mismatched seating around a dining table.  Its much more casual and visually interesting than a matching set.  And it is a must to have bench style seating on at least one side. Doesn't it make you want to grab a Scrabble game and linger a bit longer at the table?

This living room has a fairly traditional set-up with the sofa and coffee table (though I'm not sure what is going on with those pieces on the bottom right.  A chaise? Are the kids building a fort?), and would pretty much be a snooze if it weren't for that quirky zebra head and the fencing masks on the wall.  Hello personality!  Not to mention the ceiling gets me all giddy.

This makeshift pantry has taken it to the next level with industrial style shelving and metal baskets.  I love the juxtaposition of the industrial style next to the traditional style of the white pottery and wainscoting on the ceiling.  The "Grocery" sign on top and the schoolhouse style lighting add to the fun.

How's this for a staircase?  Number painted stairs and a nautical rope "railing" make for a good time.

And no quirky, comfy and cool cottage would be complete without a shed out back dedicated to some fun past time such as playing pool.  (I'm thinking I want a library in an outbuilding in my dream home-yes I think reading is a fun past time).  Painted white flooring, a modern chair and giant bird photo make this the place to be.

How do you picture your dream home?  Or are you lucky enough to already live in yours?

  2. I love the numbered steps with the rope handle, as well as the shed with the pool table. I don't live in my dream home yet, but I am mulling over locations, style, and decorating it already! I keep magazine tear sheets in a file for future reference.

  5. I love the "grocery" sign... it makes such a fun and bold statement. And the glorified shed is amazing... I have always wanted to have a little out-house away from the main house for a little escape!
