Personal Style, Defined: Preppy

For week 3 of "Personal Style, Defined" we are going to explore preppy style.  This style has been a bit harder for Jill and I to define. As we were chatting about it Jill made a good point: preppy style just "is".   We've done our best to come up with a few terms to jump off from:
In my search for interior examples, I found the majority fell into two groups.
The first of these groups are what I see as a bright, Palm Springs type of preppy:

All have bright pops of color-lots of pinks, greens, yellows and bright whites.  Bold, classic patterns such as stripes, greek key and lattice dominate.  Sisal rugs, bamboo furniture and white lacquered items abound.  Where's my gimlet?

The next group of preppy interior examples fall into the All-American, "old money", Hamptons look:

Pinstripes, plaids, monograms, designer labels, natural woods. Crisp, clean, classic.  Which way to the tennis court?

How do you all feel about this? Do you think I got it right? Any true preps out there with a different take?  Let me know!

  1. I love the sets you put together. The mirrors in the Hamptons prep are stunning!

  2. I think you are so right... there is like this "young fresh" preppy and then "old money, country club" preppy. I love all the rooms... there are so many favorites here. I love the tennis rackets above the bed - I saw some at the antique store recently and thought they would be adorable in a little boys room. And of course the Hermes blanket... oh, and the suitcase nightstand... I could go on!

  3. Super cute. I think you nailed it. And judging by the Good Look for Less post, I'm preppy in both my attire and decor.

  6. I'm SO in love with that second image. The stripes on the walls are killing me. Preppy and stripes go hand in hand. I really love all the images yo've come up with.

  7. Fashionwise I'm definitely preppy all the way. I think it was important that you separated the two types of interior preppy because they are quite distinct. I prefer Palm Springs preppy bc it's brighter, happier, and just more fun. I'll see what else you girls come up with, but I think you've got me pegged with preppy :)
