You Oughta Know: Suzanne of Suzanne Made {Giveaway Too!}

Good morning all! Did everyone have a good weekend? I hope so, but if not, I think this mornings "You Oughta Know" interview is sure to cheer you up. This time around I am picking the brain of all-around crafty gal Suzanne of the etsy shop Suzanne Made and the fab blog Suzyville. I ran across Suzanne's blog and shop after she left a comment on a blog post of mine and immediately fell in love with her crafty creations. From jewelry to journaling, this gal pretty much does it all! So sit back and enjoy the interview, and stay tuned at the end for the generous giveaway Suzanne is offering up one lucky reader!

Q: How did you get your start in jewelry making? I've always thought it would be such a fun and rewarding craft to learn.

A: I began making jewelry as a young teenager, just as a hobby. I was always thinking up ideas in my head about what I wanted to wear, but could never seem to find anything like it in stores, so I decided I would just try and make it myself. I would often dissemble vintage/antique jewelry (from aunts, grandmas, neighbors) in order to create new pieces with my own personal touch, but once I discovered the craft and bead stores it opened up a whole new world of jewelry making for me! Eventually I started getting "orders" from friends and family. Years later I took a little silversmith course which also broadened my skills a bit further than just beads and chains. It is definitely fun and rewarding-I really enjoy working with my hands and I even find it quite relaxing at times.

Q: Where do you find inspiration for the gorgeous jewelry pieces in your shop?

A: I am inspired by so many things-most of the time it's simply the beautiful materials themselves that inspire me to make something special out of them, other times I'll get inspiration from books, nature, photography, movies, old buildings, music, etc.

Q: You don't limit your craftiness to just jewelry. What are your favorite crafts as of late?

A: Lately I have been breaking out my painting supplies again...with summer upon us now I like to turn on some music, open all the windows, sit in the sunbeams and paint. I have also been doing some sewing, photography, and even trying my hand at art journaling and scrapbooking.

Q: What's a surefire way to get your creative juices flowing?

A: Definitely listening to music, reading or going for a long walk and taking some pictures will get me in a creative/crafty mood.

Q: I'm loving your summer journal pages you have been making. Some tips for an amateur journalist like me?

A: Well, I'm quite the amateur myself, but I highly recommend taking a look through some of the art journal groups on Flickr-scroll through some of the pages there and you'll be inspired with so many ideas you won;t know where to start! (Editor's note: here are a few links for you: visual journals, Just Art Journals, The Art Journal Pool) If you keep a journal already, you may want to just expand on some of your entries with random doodling, drawing little pictures of what you are writing about, print out and tape in a photo you took that day, etc. Or if you tend to keep scraps of pretty paper, ribbon, yarn, or fabric, try adding a few of those bits to your journal pages and see where it goes from there.

Q: I see on your blog that you also enjoy making cupcakes. Do you have a favorite recipe to share?

A: Yes! This recipe for Red Velvet Cake from Smitten Kitchen (my fave food blog)-the cupcake variation is at the bottom of the recipe.

Q: Where are some of your favorite places to shop for crafty supplies?

A: Etsy!!! Or if I'm desperate and have a coupon-Michael's. Although sometimes I find some neat bits at garage sales too.

Q: What are a few of your current inspirations?

A: There is never a shortage of inspiration on Flickr and etsy. And lately I have been working my way through the entire Sex and the City series on DVD-I find that I'm getting a lot of inspiration from the fashion/styling on that show.

Q: What are a few of your favorite things?

A: Handwritten letters, polaroids, retro/vintage stuff, old cameras, tattoos, cupcakes and donuts with sprinkles, birds and owls, squirrels and hedgehogs, acorns and pinecones, leaves and flowers, sea creatures, 70's and 80's music, pretty paper, kitties, iced mochas.

Q: How do you spend a typical Saturday?

A: I don't know if I have a "typical" Saturday...I try to sleep whenever possible. Since I work full time, I try and get as much crafting time in as I can on the weekends. Recently I have been going to garage sales early in the mornings. Sometimes I'll meet a friend for coffee. Maybe go to a movie...but I always try and watch a bit of SNL.
