You Oughta Know: Jill Gott-Gleason of The Good Life For Less {Giveaway Too!}

Good morning everyone! Rise and shine! Grab your cup of coffee and relax here for a moment before the frenzy of Monday begins. I have another great "You Oughta Know" interview lined up for you today with Jill, of the blogs the good life for less and 1*hundred inspirations.

Jill is one seriously fashionable gal, and the outfits she puts together on her blog are just so perfect. What I love is that most of the outfits are actually affordable and attainable for the average budget-conscience gal like me (and I am betting you too-aren't we all a little more budget minded these days?) My favorite posts are her "Work it Wednesdays", when she showcases one wardrobe piece and shows you three completely different ways to wear it. I also love that Jill is a fellow mommy to two young kiddos. She gives me inspiration to continue to look my best even though most of the day I am chasing after a three year old and cleaning the diaper of my one year old! Like her tagline says "We all deserve to live a little!" So please, read on for all the deets into this lovely lady's life and style...

Here she is-Hi Jill! Isn't she the cutest?

Q: I've been a fan of your blog ever since first running across it. What was your inspiration for starting the good life for less?

A: First of all thank you so much for reading the blog! I am seriously so thankful for each individual reader! I would have to say that my inspiration for the blog was really how I like to live my life... I like really nice things (who doesn't!?!?) but I refuse to pay a bunch of money for them! I have always been a "sale shopper" and always on the hunt for really great items for my home, for my kids or for my closet at great prices. But I think there is a bit of an art to combining the "cheap" stuff with solid classic pieces that makes it all come together uniquely. So that is what I strive to do on the blog. I always laugh a little bit at myself while I am clipping coupons (I obsess about coupons - ha!) and shopping grocery sales like mad while prancing around in designer jeans. But hey, that's just me!
Classic Jill!

Q: What is your fashion philosophy?

A: I would say that my fashion philosophy these days is simplicity and ease. If stilettos are trending, but they kill your feet - well, then, move on to the next trend, right? I mean, I think it needs to work for you and it needs to come naturally. I think that the ability to evolve within both the trends and yourself is important too. Lately I am in a very easy, simple almost organic trend with clothing. I want it to evolve naturally, to reflect me and to feel good. Currently, this style reflects where I am in life: home with my kids, taking my personal health more seriously and having fun! It's very different from where I was a year ago... in suits and heels everyday. That was me then (I loved it...) but this is me now. I think if you are honest with yourself about where you are in your life, your clothes will reflect that and you will be pleased with the outcome.

Q: I'm always in awe of the way you pull together outfits; you can accessorize like no other! Can you give us a few tips on how to pull together a look like you do?

A:Awww.... thanks! That is a really good question. I actually do have some formulas in my head about how to pull together a really great outfit, even if it is only jeans and a t-shirt. I would say the key is to look for ways to add interest. This can be done with one or more of the following things... a simple cardigan thrown over a tank top, a t-shirt and light-weight scarf in the summer, some fun bangle bracelets, always really great shoes and I really love a fun oversized handbag. Fashion is SO accessible these days. With stores like Forever 21 that offer scarves, earrings, cool hats and sunglasses for all less than $10 there is no excuse to not have fun accessorizing! Then I really love great sites like Piperlime and GILT GROUPE that offer high-style shoes and handbags at great prices!

Q: Here is my main problem when shopping for clothes: I get to the mall/store/online shop and am paralyzed by indecision because of all the options. Where do I even begin?

A:This is another great question and I think we all suffer from this. I know I certainly do. Being organized is important and that is why I love sites like Polyvore and Shopstyle. You can pre-plan what individual pieces you are looking for or what look you are going for and then execute those ideas. I also have two tips on this... first, be familiar with a store's return policy and don't feel bad bringing a piece home and deciding you don't like it and then bring it back (of course, don't wear it first or take the tags off). The second is online shopping. I like doing this because you can have multiple store windows virtually open and can compare prices, styles or fits. You can leave your items in your "cart" overnight to think about it all and in general have a slower paced shopping experience. No loud music, no crying kids, no pushy sales people.

Q: Tell us about your new venture the good LOOK for less.

A: Ahhh, my new little baby, good LOOK for less.

The good LOOK for less is simply wardrobe styling for the masses but highly individualized. Does that make sense? I think everyone can access great fashion these days... but that doesn't make us all fashion minded. So my goal is to help women (and maybe men, wouldn't that be cool?!?) to put together really great outfits, but on a budget - your budget! We all know that Rachael Zoe could make us look fabulous, but we don't all have Rachael Zoe budgets. If you are looking to spruce up your wardrobe with just three or four new pieces and $150, I can help you! If you are looking to overhaul your whole closet and have $1,000 and upwards to spend I can help you too! What I do is I learn a little bit about what you are looking for, what your current style is, areas that you want to improve or be challenged, what your budget is and then I put together a shopping list for you and outfits based around that shopping list. I think that the pieces that you buy should be really versatile, so I want to show you several ways to wear each of the pieces. I have priced my services so that they are really affordable and I like to say that the service will help you wear your clothes more, have less pieces that still have the tags on them or never get worn - it's almost like a trade for the duds in your closet! No more duds!

Q: What are your favorite stores?

A: Lately I am really liking Gap for the classics (they go in cycles for me, right now I feel like they are pretty strong), JCrew when on sale, Forever 21 for the fun and cheap stuff and GILT GROUPE for the luxury stuff at drop dead prices.

Q: Who are your favorite designers?

A: My dream designers are Marc Jacobs for his frivolity that is unexpected and even a little over the top (we all want to be a little over the top sometimes, right?), Tory Burch for classic women's shoes and handbags and ADAM for the secret rockstar in me - those pieces seem a little "edgy" to me. Thank goodness for GILT GROUPE that any of these pieces are even affordable for me!

Q: What is currently inspiring you?

A: My current inspiration... I would almost call it an obsession right now is paint chips. If there is any magazine with paint ideas in it, that page is ripped out and sitting on my desk. Especially these reds and yellows (from BHG May 2009 & June 2009). I'm not even planning to paint in my house at all... I just want to let all the gorgeous colors swirl in my head.

Q: Name a few of your favorite things.

A: ohhh... favorite things! This is easy: coffee, ribbed tank tops, pilates, candy, Sevens jeans, naps, Cat Power's music and my Havaiana's Slim flip flops. I could consume, wear, do or use one of these every single day!

Q: How do you spend a typical Saturday?

A: Saturdays are really chilled out around here. Usually I sleep in an extra 30 minutes or so, since my husband isn't at work and then we usually pile into the car as a family for the gym. In the afternoon the kids will play or nap and I will usually run an errand or two. We only have one car, so sometimes I have to catch up with running around on the weekends. Then I like to unwind with my knitting and a glass of wine in the evening. On occasion my husband and I will rent a movie, which is always fun. We live a very simple life these days... I am liking life in the slow (but always fashionable!) lane.

I sincerely want to thank you, Jackie, for the interview... this was really fun!

  15. What a great interview! And so much fun to get to know Jill better. I had to laugh when she said she was obsessed with coupons...and she uses her coupons while she prances around the grocery store in designer jeans. That just hit pretty close to home for me! I have to admit that the grocery coupons are the reason I subscribed to the Sunday paper. :)

  27. Great interview! Polyvore was an excellent suggestion--that is ONE of my biggest fashion hang-ups lately. The others are mixed into the fact that I'm a pregnant mother of two with a home business and I'm stuck in the capri-flip-flops-tank-top monotony that is mommyhood--Help me Jill!! No seriously, she's such an inspiration!

  28. I loved the advice on adding interest to every outfit. I like classic, timeless styles but they are often hard to make look "in style" when I want to be a little more trendy. Adding a few more accessories just might do the trick. Thanks

  29. This was such an inspiring interview. My favorite part was reading about how she dresses to suit her current lifestyle...being a mom but still finding ways to express her unique personality through fashion, yet keeping it suitable to her daily life. I just had a baby almost 3 months ago and am so frustrated with this "transition" body of mine, as nothing fits. Perhaps I'm just having unrealistic expectations and need to simply accessorize more to feel better about my wardrobe. Or, perhaps I need to lovingly embrace the body (with all of its new quirks) that God gave me which allowed me to have my precious daughter.
